Cole Williams Racing Release via Speed51.com – Sellersburg, IN: 20 year old, Cole Williams, claimed the guitar at the historic Fairgrounds Speedway in Nashville, Tennessee this past Saturday night in front of another huge crowd. The team was excited to return to action after a turn of events that had taken him out of the season opener. “The season opener was the first race with our new Port City chassis. Combined with WAR Shocks and our Phil Harper/Ilmor engine we knew the car was a good piece, but unfortunately some bad luck happened, it just wasn’t our night,” stated the 2014 Fairgrounds champ Cole Williams.
This past weekend saw the young hot shoe at the top of the leader board in the final 2 practices of the weekend before going on to set quick time in qualifying. With the invert being an 8, Cole knew he needed to exhibit patience moving through the field in the 100 lap event. He worked his way up to 2ndposition early in the race right behind the famed Sterling Marlin, before appearing to struggle some and dropping back to 3rd, then there was a late caution. During the caution, he came on the radio “boys we’re in trouble, the car is extremely loose,” exclaimed Cole.
However, after a series of yellows it became apparent that Cole still had a great short run car. On a late restart, Cole found himself back in 2nd behind Spencer Davis when Sterling Marlin encountered mechanical issues. The two led the field to the green for the restart, coming out of turn 2 Davis had the edge and quickly slid up across Cole’s nose, allowing the 46 machine to make a crossover move to perfection to take over the lead. Unfortunately, shortly after the red flag appeared for a group of cars that had crashed in turns 3 and 4. Due to a city curfew in Nashville, the race would have to be decided with a green/white/checker finish once the cleanup was completed. At the final restart, Cole kept the lead and never looked back capturing his 4th win at the famed track. “Definitely didn’t think that we would have a shot at the win with the way the car dropped off on the long green flag runs, but the series of yellows definitely played in our favor. Felt good to be able to capture another guitar,” smiled Cole.
Although the team was excited about the win, there isn’t much time to celebrate. They are already moving their focus to this weekend for the JEGS CRA All Stars tour race at I-44 Speedway in Lebanon, Missouri. Cole is the 2013 NASCAR Missouri state and I-44 Speedway track champion. “We have raced many times at I-44, it is always great to return to so many great fans that continue to support and encourage me in achieving my dream. Hopefully, we can carry the momentum from Nashville forward and have the same success this weekend. We are also excited to be carrying a couple new logos for this race as Dickey’s BBQ & Super 8 are both on board for this weekend.” said the youngster.
