Speed51.com Story – Two young racers competed like veterans on Wednesday night at New Smyrna Speedway (FL). 21-year-old Ty Majeski and 15-year-old Harrison Burton put on a show for fans watching the 35-lap Super Late Model feature at the 50th annual World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing. In the end, it was Majeski standing in victory lane for the second time after a fierce battle with Burton.
“A really clean battle first of all,” Majeski told Speed51.com powered by JEGS. “I respect the heck out of him as a race car driver. He could have went up and doored me any time he wanted to, but he raced me clean. I appreciate that.”
Burton, who stood in victory lane Wednesday night, raced on the inside groove of the race track for the entirety of the battle with Majeski to his outside. The two raced close for a number of laps before Burton eventually got loose off of turn two with a handful of laps remaining.
“It was a lot of fun,” Burton said of the battle. “Me and Ty had a pretty clean race and it’s a lot of fun to race guys like that because it doesn’t happen as often as us Super Late Model drivers would like it to. I really enjoyed it and I had a lot of fun racing with Ty. He’s a really tough guy to beat. That shows how you have to keep evolving when you’re racing these guys. Last night we were the class of the field and tonight he was.”
Throughout the World Series, Burton has stressed how important it is to evolve each day. On Wednesday night, he admitted that a runner-up finish will only make his team work harder for the final three nights of racing.
“Everything can change and people can get better as the day goes on,” Burton explained. “Ty obviously had it pretty well tonight and we just have to work a little bit harder to catch up to him.”
Friday’s winner Steve Wallace, California native Derek Thorn and defending champion Zane Smith completed the top-five.
Despite standing in victory lane for the second time during the 50th annual World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing, Majeski himself recognized that he still has work to do for the rest of the week.
“The car was too free tonight and too tight last night. We made the right change, but we went a little bit too far so hopefully we’ll be better for tomorrow.”
