Hutson Picks Up Second Series Championship
Salem, IN (October 12, 2020) – J.P. Crabtree got the win in Saturday night’s 50 lap Vore’s Welding CRA Late Model Sportsman Powered by JEGS Season Championship event at Winchester Speedway, after flagged race winner Brandon Varney’s car did not pass post-race inspection. The win was Crabtree’s second career series win.
“It always great to get a win,” remarked Crabtree in victory lane. “I would have rather won it on the track, but my team and I worked our butt’s off to get here and race tonight and be in position to get the win. I have to thank everyone who helps us get to the racetrack, my family, my team and everyone who came out here to support us tonight. It’s great being a two-time winner at Winchester !”
Crabtree raced in the JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour event Friday night at Winchester Speedway and got caught up in an on-track incident not of his making, that did some damage to the nose of the car. During the race Crabtree’s right-side door and rear fender flew off the car and over the wall in the back stretch.
Crabtree would go on to finish in 11th with most of the body missing on his car. When they went to try and retrieve the body parts, someone else had already taken them.
“We looked around were they went over the wall and they were gone. We figured a fan from the campground grabbed them up as a souvenir, we went out in the campground, but couldn’t find them anywhere,” added Crabtree. “We took the car back to the shop and cut the right-side body parts off one of our older cars and used those to help get the car back together. We got here just in time to qualify on Saturday, we missed both practice sessions, but the car was good Friday, so I felt like we would have good piece for Friday!”
For his efforts to get the car back together and race on Saturday, Crabtree was awarded the KRJ Race Products Sweet Move of the Race Award. Crabtree won this event in 2018 in similar fashion when the events flagged winner did not pass post-race tech.
Billy Hutson finished in second, the highest of the series 2020 Chase for the Championship drivers, earning him the series 2020 Championship. It was the second series Championship for Hutson, who also won it 13 years ago in 2007.
“It feels really good to get this second Championship,” remarked Hutson. “It took a while, we’ve been in the hunt the last couple of seasons and came up a little short, but we finally got the second one tonight! I have to thank everyone who supports this team. A lot of hard work and effort goes into running for a Championship and I appreciate everyone on this team for their help and staying behind me!”
Chris Shannon would finish in third place. Series Chase contender Cassten Everidge finished in fourth place and second in the series 2020 Chase for the Championship in his first time competing for a CRA Championship. Another Chase contender, Austin Coe, finished in fifth place and finished third in the series 2020 Chase for the Championship.
Chase contender Tanner Jack had his day end on lap five after getting caught up in a multi car incident that damaged his car too much to continue to race. Jack finished in fourth in the series 2020 Chase for the Championship and was the series 2020 Rookie of the Year.
