Salem, IN (June 25, 2018) – Veteran Ft. Wayne, Indiana racer Tommy Cook got the win in Saturday night’s 75 lap event for the Vore’s Welding CRA Late Model Sportsman Powered by JEGS at Baer Field Motorsports Park, located just south of Fort Wayne, Indiana. It was a clean sweep for Cook as he was the Allstar Performance Fast Qualifier earlier in the day.
“It feels good to finally get a CRA win here at Baer Field,” remarked Cook in victory lane. “I always enjoy racing with this series, this was a good field of cars between the series regulars and the Baer Field cars. I knew I had a good car for the long run, so I just took my time and finally got under Terry (Fisher Jr.), who was starting to push a little. Once we got out front I knew nobody was going to catch us. I have to thank my car owner and my whole team for all their hard work!”
Shawn Amor took the early lead from his pole starting position after Cook drew a five for the events inverted start, but Amor’s car was smoking out the left front early in the race and the car’s handling started to go away. Former ARCA/CRA Super Series regular Terry Fisher Jr. road behind Amor for several laps, waiting patiently for an opportunity to pass, Fisher Jr. then made his move to the front to take over the lead from the fading Amor on lap 28.
Cook soon followed Fisher Jr. by Amor to grab second and set his sights on Fisher Jr. Cook patiently worked Fisher waiting for an opportunity. The only cautions of the race flew on lap 37, first for Brian Janes who broke a drive-shaft, then on the next green Austin Coe’s car slipped on the restart making contact with Tony Brutti putting him into the front stretch wall. Both drivers’ nights were done from damage.
Fisher Jr. pulled away on the lap 38 restart, but Cook was soon on Fisher Jr.’s tail, and then made the inside pass to get the lead on lap 55. From there Cook pulled away to get the win by nearly two seconds over Fisher Jr. Cook picked up the AR Bodies Cool Move of the Race for his pass of Fisher Jr. for the lead. Fisher Jr. picked up the Racer Parts Wholesale Sweet Move of the Race Award for his pass of Amor earlier in the event.
Former series Champion Billy Hutson finished in third place. Amor held on to get a hard fought fourth place finish. Shawn Bonar finished in faith place. Jason Timmerman came from his 11th place starting position to finish in sixth and earned the Spillers Towing Hardcharger Award.
The Vore’s Welding CRA Late Model Sportsman next event will be this Sunday, July 1st, the Raintree 100 at Mt. Lawn Speedway, the first event of the new Triple Crown Series, which will feature three 100-lap, $2000 to win events, and a points fund that will pay the Triple Crown Champion $1000. There will also be 2 random draw winners for $500 each from all teams that have attended all three Triple Crown events.
