Located in the Foothills of North Carolina Hickory Motor Speedway is one the most historic short tracks and it’s been coined “The World’s Most Famous Short Track” and “The Birthplace of the NASCAR Stars”
Hickory Motor Speedway first opened in 1951 as a half mile dirt track. Drivers such as Junior Johnson, Ned Jarrett and Ralph Earnhardt all were champions during the 1950’s with Earnhardt winning 5 of them himself.
The track has been reconfigured 3 times in its lifetime. In 1955 it was reconfigured to a 4/10 mile dirt track. 1967 would see the 4/10 mile dirt track get paved. By 1970 the track was shortened one more time to its current length of 0.363 miles.
The North Carolina short track has played host to many NASCAR Grand National Series events as well as several Busch Series events. In 1997 short track legend Dick Trickle would win a NASCAR Busch Series event.
Today Hickory Motor Speedway hosts weekly NASCAR Sanctioned events featuring Late Model Stocks, Limited Late Models, Street Stocks, Super Trucks and Renegades. They also host several of the premier series in short track racing.
