STARS National Tour Brings ASA Racing Back to Owosso Speedway

Original American Speed Association Has History at Michigan Oval

Owosso, MI (August 4, 2024) – When the ASA STARS National Tour rolls into Owosso Speedway for the Michigan 200 on August 17, it will mark the return of the ASA brand to the central Michigan oval for the first time in 45 years.

The original American Speed Association sanctioned a total of 3 national tour events at the newly remodeled speedway located east of Ovid, Michigan, between Ovid and Owosso, just 30 mile northeast of the Michigan State Capital in Lansing. Some of the biggest names in ASA history found success at the track.

Canadian short track star Junior Hanley won the first ever ASA National event at Owosso, on August 28, 1977. Hanley led 98 of the 100 laps, beating Bob Senneker and Mark Martin in claiming one of his five ASA National Series wins.

Michigan legend Randy Sweet won the following year, on June 11, 1978, with Senneker and Martin again finishing 2nd and 3rd. The Owosso win was one of four ASA National Series wins for Sweet.

7-time ASA National Champion Mike Eddy would win the ASA event at Owosso on June 10, 1979, the final visit by the series until this year. Eddy led 93 of the 100 laps.

The Michigan 200 will mark race #7 of the ASA STARS National Tour schedule, and is set for 8:00PM Eastern Time on Saturday evening, August 17. Advance tickets are available by visiting the tracks website. Owosso Speedway is located 30 minutes northeast of Lansing, at 7204 W M21, Owosso, MI 48866.

Fans unable to attend can watch on TRACKTV.com. MAVTV will air the event on a tape-delayed basis on Monday, August 26.
