The ASA Southern Super Series will head to Crisp Motorsport Park (GA) for the Georgia Spring Nationals 125 on Saturday, April 1st. This will be the first of two point-races for the series at the Watermelon Capital Speedway this year. The drivers will be competing for the $10,000 first-place check on Saturday night under the lights.
There is more on the line as points positions will be key for Southern Super Series competitors as provisionals will be awarded to the highest non-qualifying drivers at the upcoming ASA STARS event at North Wilkesboro on May 16th. A high car count is expected and solid finishes at Watermelon Capital and Montgomery Motor Speedway (AL) on April 15th could be the difference between racing and going home at North Wilkesboro.
After three races in the ASA Southern Super Series, the on-track action has been nothing short of spectacular. Each race has been packed with side-by-side racing, tons of on-track passing, ultimately producing a different winner each time.
So far this season there have been 20 lead changes over the first 450 laps of competition. A look at the history book shows that this is a record for the first three races and the season total could very much be in jeopardy with 11 races remaining including the All American 400.
“We are very ecstatic about the on-track product we have seen this year with the Southern Super Series,” said series General Manager Tim Bryant. “Fans want to see passing on the track and we have had nothing short of that in the first few races. Considering how tough the competition is, I think we will see more of that as the season goes on.”
Passing has also been a premium behind the leaders with lots of drivers making up spots after the time trials. Five drivers gained double-digit positions from their starting spots by the race’s end.
The excitement upfront has been balanced out by the high car counts as well. With an average over 31 cars per race over the first three events shows growth in the Super Late Model community. In addition, the series has created an average of 12 or so cars on the lead lap come checkered flag time.
“We are seeing another strong trend with cars on the lead lap at the end of these shows as well,” added Bryant. “If you have a dozen or so cars in the mix it keeps you watching every lap because position can change at any moment. We have had three races this year and they have been highly competitive races for the fans and drivers.”
During the last race for the ASA Southern Super Series was the inaugural ASA STARS event won by Casey Roderick. Along the way there were 10 lead changes among eight drivers. Also six drivers gained 10 spots or more to post top 10 finishes.
The Georgia Spring Nationals is the first of two $10,000 to win events in the month of April as the series will be back in action at Montgomery Motor Speedway (AL) on Saturday, April 15th.
This will be the 13th ASA Southern Super Series race at Crisp Motorsport Park with the track having produced eight different winners in those events. Bubba Pollard leads the way with four wins after he won SpeedFest in January.
Racing will start at 5pm at the Peach State track located off exit 104 on I-75 in central Georgia. Local classes will include a 50-lap race for the Pro Late Model division.
