Owosso, MI – NASCAR Cup Series driver and Byron, Michigan native Erik Jones is set to return to his short track roots, entering the Michigan 300 at Owosso Speedway on Wednesday August 20th with the ASA STARS National Tour. The highly anticipated event will bring one of Michigan’s most successful racing exports back home to battle against some of the nation’s best Super Late Model drivers.
Jones, a two-time NASCAR Cup Series race winner and former Southern 500 champion, built his career through success on short tracks across the country. He’s a two time winner of the Snowball Derby and a three time winner of the Winchester 400. Other notable wins include the Florida Governor’s Cup, Redbud 400 and the Howie Lettow Memorial. As he made the climb up the NASCAR ranks he won the NASCAR Truck Series Championship in 2015. Now, he’s eager to mix it up once again in the high-intensity world of Super Late Model racing.
The Michigan 300 will serve as race 9 on the Appalachian Sucker Punch ASA STARS National Tour calendar, attracting an elite field that includes national champions, short track standouts, and rising stars. With 300 laps around Owosso’s fast 3/8-mile oval, the race will test both speed and strategy as teams battle for a coveted victory in one of Michigan’s most prestigious races.
The Michigan 300 marks a return to ASA history at Owosso Speedway. The original ASA National Tour featured legendary winners at the Michigan oval, including Canadian star Junior Hanley (1977), Randy Sweet (1978), and Mike Eddy (1979). The ASA STARS National Tour made its return to the track in 2024, where Chandler Smith took the checkered flag.
