Charlie Shaw, a longtime local businessman and racing enthusiast who served as owner and steward of the historic Winchester Speedway, has died at age 90.
Shaw, who purchased the iconic high-banked half-mile oval track to preserve its deep roots in American motorsports, was instrumental in maintaining Winchester’s reputation as the “World’s Fastest Half-Mile”.
Under Shaw’s leadership, the 37-degree banked asphalt oval continued to host marquee grassroots racing fixtures, including the prestigious Winchester 400 for late models and high-profile events for USAC sprint cars and the ARCA Menards Series.
Known for his commitment to the Randolph County community and the surrounding region, Shaw spent years modernizing facility operations while carefully keeping intact the track’s original 1916 character.
Racers and fans alike knew Shaw for his hands-on management approach and presence around the pit area during major race weekends, frequently welcoming new generations of drivers who tested their skills on one of the country’s steepest and most challenging tracks.
Winchester Speedway remains under the ownership of the Shaw family to this day, with day to day operations carried out by his loyal staff, led by Steve Vore, Dan and Linda Redmond, Tom Bigelow, and Randy Crist.
