ASA Weekend Preview

While the ASA STARS National Tour is still three weeks away from its next event at Hickory Motor Speedway, the ASA Midwest Tour will be in action in Wisconsin on Sunday…

ASA Midwest Tour

The ASA Midwest Tour will host their second event of the season on Sunday Afternoon, May 5 at Madison International Speedway just outside the Wisconsin State Capital city of Madison. The Joe Shear Classic will take center stage, with a 200 lap, 100 mile special event to open the season at MIS.

2023 ASA STARS National Tour Champion Ty Majeski headlines a stellar field of entries for Joe Shear Classic, and comes into the weekend the odds-on favorite win. So-much-so, in fact, that the track has put a $3,600 Bounty out for anyone who can beat him Sunday afternoon.

Majeski, the five-time ASA Midwest Tour Series Champion, is considered a generational talent on the short tracks of Wisconsin, harking back memories of the all-time greats including Dick Trickle; Mark Martin; Matt Kenseth and Joe Shear, the events namesake.

Majeski dominated the ASA Midwest Tour opener two weeks ago at Slinger, to record his 35th Midwest Tour victory. He’s been dominant over the past decade, and is the defending champion of the Joe Shear Classic.

But winning the Joe Shear will not come easy, despite his record and recent dominance. Majeski is also scheduled to race in the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN TRUCK SERIES Event at Kansas Speedway…a race which is not scheduled to start until 8pm central time Saturday night.

That means Majeski will need to travel about 500 miles from Kansas City to Madison International Speedway after the truck race. He’ll miss the optional practice day at MIS on Saturday, and will have limited track time prior to the drop of the green flag.

2023 ASA Midwest Tour Champion Gabe Sommers is also entered, as the third generation racer from Plover, WI works to defend of his Series Title. Other Midwest Tour Stars scheduled to compete include Justin Mondeik; Levon VanDerGeest and Max Kahler.

ASA STARS National Tour full-time competitor Austin Nason is also entered, and has had success at Madison in the past, winning the Howie Lettow Memorial race last August.

The track will hold an “open practice” on Saturday, May 4. Race day sees gates opening at 10:30am on Sunday, practice for the Midwest Tour and Midwest Trucks gets underway at 11:30am with qualifying at 12:45pm and the first race at 2pm. Arrive early as the UW Marching Band will be performing the National Anthem. Discount tickets are available in advance online at www.misracing.com/tickets. Madison International Speedway is located at 1122 Sunrise Road in Oregon, WI.
