Mooresville, NC 7/3/13- Just a couple of weeks ago Trey Mitchell made the long trek north to the state of Michigan to compete at the Berlin Raceway in the annual Battle of Berlin 251. Now the twenty three year old native of Wimberley, Texas will travel even farther north of the Mason-Dixon Line to Milwaukee, Wisconsin for the second annual Howie Lettow Memorial 150 at The Milwaukee Mile racetrack.
The two day event on Monday (7/8) and Tuesday (7/9) will be second time Mitchell has competed at the one mile track having raced in the same event a season ago. Trey qualified an impressive sixth out of the seventy plus entries that took time in qualifying, attempting to make the forty-two car starting field. During the race the Texan never faded outside the top ten racing against the likes of Matt Kenseth and Johnny Sauter, until a motor issue ended his night early, thirty-four laps shy of the checkered flag.
“Last year we had a good car and good run at a track I didn’t know much about. It just so happened to be the biggest and fastest track I’d ever been to as well, so to have the run we did before the motor let go, I was happy,” explained Mitchell. “I think a lot of people found out who Trey Mitchell was last year so we have to back things up with a good run again this year. They are expecting over eighty cars, even more than they had last year, so we are really going to have to be on our game. Our plan of attack, just like it was before, is to approach it in a two step process with an all out effort on qualifying for the race; and then you can focus on racing. You can’t worry about the race if you don’t make the field. There’s no room for mistakes at this one.”
As mentioned by Mitchell, eighty plus cars are expected to be on hand when the track opens for practice on Monday. While a majority of the competitors are everyday short track warriors, names like Kyle Busch, Matt Kenseth, and Johnny Sauter also appear on the entry list, showcasing the NASCAR presence on hand. Despite the caliber of drivers competing, Mitchell says they are just another car in his path to victory lane.
“Those guys (NASCAR stars) are just another competitor you’re trying to beat. As a racer your goal is to be faster than the guy you are racing next to at the time. The safety equipment in these cars only allows you to see so much, so all you can do is race the car next to you, not the man holding the wheel,” said Mitchell.
The Howie Lettow Memorial 150 at The Milwaukee Mile kicks off on Monday July 8th with three practice sessions for super late model competitors. The following day the tale-tale sign of what kind of car you brought to do battle will be on display as qualifying kicks off at high noon. Finally, at 6:30pm the command to fire engines takes place letting forty-two competitors battle around the one mile track for the $10,000 to win prize money.
