May 17, 2014 – “Thank you to all the fans and to my crew. Chris (Wimmer) was really good and I didn’t know how much I had until I got the edge when we got to the lapped cars. We finally won!” said a happy Tim Sauter from victory lane at State Park Speedway for the State Park Speedway 125 tonight in Wausau, WI after a hard-fought battle with Chris Wimmer.
“I was just trying to hold on there. I tried to run with him, but he just checked out,” said Wimmer after a great run.
Touring Stars, Boris Jurkovic and Jonathan Eilen set the pace for the 26-car field for the ARCA Midwest Tour presented by Scag Power Equipment 125 lap feature. Eilen took the early lead, but before they could complete lap one Jesse Pokszyk hit the turn three wall gathering up Tucker Miller ending the night for both of them. This set the field up for a complete restart.
Boris and Eilen remained side-by-side until Boris finally got cleared him and Chris Weinkauf dove under Eilen for second. The rest of the field was settling in. Weinkauf didn’t waste any time getting under Boris for for the top spot and started to pull away a little bit. Chris Wimmer had made his way up to third and Touring Star, Nathan Haseleu was fifth behind Eilen. The top five put a little bit of distance between themselves and the rest of the pack.
Wimmer started putting pressure on Jurkovic for the second spot and was able to take it over on lap 15. Weinkauf continued to put more distance between himself and the rest of the field. Fast qualifier Tim Sauter was making his way through the field running seventh.
As Weinkauf approached lapped traffic, it allowed Wimmer to close up a little bit. Weinkauf and Wimmer had pulled away from Jurkovic and Eilen as they battled it out for the third spot. Meanwhile, Haseleu patiently watched from the fifth spot.
Two lapped cars battling for position in front of Weinkauf gave Wimmer a chance to close up even more. But Weinkauf weaved his way through the traffic. Wimmer started to make his move as they again approached lapped traffic. Tim Sauter continued to rally through the field passing Haseleu for the fifth spot.
The second caution of the night came out when Skylar Holzhausen and Joel Theisen got together on the front stretch. Both had to restart from the rear of the field.
At the restart, Chris Weinkauf started on the inside, Wimmer chose the outside, followed by Jurkovic on the inside and Eilen outside. Weinkauf again got the lead but it wasn’t without pressure. Wimmer stuck his nose under Weinkauf for the top spot, followed by Tim Sauter. Wimmer started to give himself a little bit of room over Sauter and Sauter kept a safe distance from Weinkauf.
Ty Majeski was on the move working his way into fifth and closing in on Jurkovic. The top three continued to pull away as the battle continued for fourth through seventh.
With ten laps until the break, Wimmer continued to set the pace followed by Tim Sauter, Chris Weinkauf, Boris Jurkovic and Ty Majeski. As the battle between Boris and Majeski heated up, James Swan had caught up to Jonathan Eilen. When the caution flew for the 75 lap break, it was Wimmer, Sauter, Weinkauf, Jurkovic, and Majeski.
The field once again got to choose their lane at the restart of the second half. Wimmer chose the inside, Sauter on the outside, followed by Weinkauf and Jurkovic. As the field took the green flag, Casey Johnson and Matt Kocourek both ended up in the turn three wall, yet again setting the field up for a complete restart.
Wimmer jumped to the lead as Sauter followed suit. Weinkauf was busy watching Majeski and Jurkovic in his rearview mirror. Majeski got by Boris and followed Swan followed suit. Wimmer and Sauter started to pull away. Majeski had his eyes set on Weinkauf. Majeski slid under Weinkauf to take away the third spot with 41 laps remaining.
Wimmer and Sauter worked their way through lapped traffic allowing Sauter to close in on the bumper of Wimmer. Sauter got his nose under Wimmer and sealed the deal with 29 laps to go. Majeski was now a straightaway behind in third. Sauter started to make some distance between him and Wimmer.
Sauter appeared to be on cruise control as he maintained a full straightaway lead over Wimmer. Majeski was in a comfortable third with 10 laps remaining.
The battle for fourth was a heated discussing between Weinkauf, Swan, Morrissey and Holzhausen and in the end Holzhausen claimed the spot.
Sauter started his day as the fast qualifier and ended his day in victory lane. Wimmer, Majeski, Holzhausen, and Chris Weinkauf rounded out the top five.
