Sept. 22, 2013 – i-gogs Sunglasses Touring Star Andrew Morrissey left nothing on the table as he powered to the win in the ARCA Midwest Tour presented by SCAG Power Equipment and Lester Buildings Thunderstruck 93 main event at Elko Speedway. Nick Murgic took the lead early as he and fellow front row starter Spiked Island Touring Star Cardell Potter battled side by side. Murgic was able to shake Potter, but sixth starting Morrissey wasted no time in getting to the front, taking the lead on lap 11. Fourth starting i-gogs Sunglasses Touring Star Rich Bickle then pressured Murgic and finally was able to take second on lap 55.
The front pair ran close until a caution flew for i-gogs Sunglasses Touring Star Jeff Storm’s stalled car on lap 78. Bickle took the lead on the restart, leading Morrissey to the break at lap 93. When racing resumed, Morrissey regained the lead, before once again, Bickle put his car in front on lap 97. It was a short stay however as Morrissey would take the lead for good two laps later. Bickle had his hands full in the final 25 laps as DOC 360 Touring Star Chris Wimmer worked his way from 10th starting spot to challenge for and take the second position. Morrissey would navigate from a couple of late race incidents to main his lead on the restarts and take the checkered flag by .823 seconds over Wimmer for the win.
For Morrissey, everything seemed to fall into place. “The car was good all weekend long,” said Morrissey in victory lane. “I kind of made a mistake in qualifying. I think we could have had fast time, but it probably worked out better that we didn’t. I was able to get a good starting spot and just was able to get out front and maintain my tires and everything worked out.”
Wimmer’s late race charged netted him the runner up spot on a track that he really enjoys racing at. “This is one of my favorite race tracks,” said Wimmer as he sat just outside victory lane. “You can run the bottom and the top and to come out of here with a second place finish, I’m really happy.”
Despite leading a couple of different times, Rich Bickle felt disappointed following a solid third place finish. “We swapped tires at the break,” said the veteran driver. “I shouldn’t have done that. It wouldn’t turn the last 30 laps.”
One more event remains in the 2013 season for the ARCA Midwest Tour presented by SCAG Power Equipment and Lester Buildings, the Oktoberfest 100 at LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway October 5th and 6th.
