Gabe Sommers cemented his 2023 ASA Midwest Tour championship by winning the Oktoberfest 200 during the 54th Annual Oktoberfest Race Weekend at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway in West Salem, Wisconsin.
The 20-year-old from Plover, Wisconsin joins eight other drivers as an ASA Midwest Tour as it concluded its 17th year this past Sunday. He joins the list that includes Nathan Haseleu, Dan Fredrickson (2), Steve Carlson (2), Andrew Morrissey, Jonathan Eilen, Ty Majeski (5), Dalton Zehr, Casey Johnson (3).
Sommers and his GSR team had an up and down weekend at Oktoberfest. On Thursday night, he was involved in a spectacular wreck where Jeremy Lepak’s car landed on top his car in turns three and four during the Knights of Oktoberfest race. The team debuted a new car on Friday than qualified second behind Majeski, missing out another fast qualifier award by 0.018 seconds.
On Sunday, he barely escaped being involved in the incident in turn four that took out Majeski and Zehr, allowing Sommers to take the lead and the victory.
This season, Sommers has two wins, Hawkeye Downs and La Crosse Speedway, along with three fast qualifier awards en route to his first championship.
In his ASAMT career, Sommers has 47 starts with four wins, four fast qualifier awards, 19 top-fives and 34 top-tens.
