ARCA Midwest Tour Set To Begin Points Race

by Gregg Paul
The ARCA Midwest Tour presented by SCAG Power Equipment and Lester Buildings officially began their 2013 racing season back on April 20th at the Toledo Speedway with a combination event with the ARCA/CRA Super Series powered by JEGS. Despite the cold weather, the racing action was as hot as expected with Johnny Van Doorn narrowly holding off Chris Wimmer for the victory. An impressive field of 43 cars attempted to race at Toledo, but it was decided that all 23 of the cars from the ARCA Midwest Tour would receive equal points regardless of finishing positions.

The points battle will begin in earnest this weekend as the 5th Annual Joe Shear Classic is on tap at the Madison International Speedway May 4th-5th. Saturday May 4th will be an optional practice session from Noon until 5pm. A full day of racing action is set for Sunday May 5th with practice beginning at 11:30am. Qualifying will start at 1:15pm with racing action starting at 2:30pm. The SCAG Power Equipment Midwest Truck Tour will take to the track for their first action of the season. The INEX Legends cars will also be on hand to race at Wisconsin’s fastest half mile oval.

The 5th Annual Joe Shear Classic will be a 100 lap main event with a break at lap 64. This will leave a 36 lap shootout to honor the newly elected Southeastern Wisconsin Short Track Racing Hall Of Fame member, the legendary Joe Shear. The 36 lap segment is a tribute to the number 36 that adorned Shear’s race cars throughout his stellar career.

The previous winners of this prestigious event have been a testament to the talents and notoriety of the competitors within the ARCA Midwest Tour.

Andrew Morrissey is the defending race winner, who scored his first career victory in the series. Morrissey outdueled Skylar Holzhausen and Travis Sauter to take the checkers. All three drivers will return to continue their battles in hopes of adding this trophy to their mantles.

The Sauter family will be well represented in the Joe Shear Classic as Travis Sauter, who has won the last six straight races he has entered at MIS, will be joined by his father Tim, and his Uncle Johnny Sauter. Johnny, who drives in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series won the first two events of the season and is currently tied for second in points.

There are thirty two cars entered for the 2013 Joe Shear Classic. Thirty two drivers racing to make a name for themselves while hoping to win the race named after a legend.
