Two ASAMT Champions Eager for Their Norway Debut on Saturday

Norway, MI – During the ten-year hiatus since the ASA Midwest Tour competed at Norway Speedway in Norway, MI, two drivers won a total of five tour championships. Not only does having multiple titles make one thing in common between the two, neither has ever competed at the Dickinson County Fairgrounds track.

Two-time defending champion Gabe Sommers will make his first trip to the upper peninsula for this Saturday’s Norway 100 presented by Weimar Bearing and Transmission.

“I have not been there,” Sommers recently admitted. “It looks really flat, with tight corners, kind of like one and two at Jefferson. So hopefully we can bring a good package. It sounds like it’s a lot different racing up there, so I guess we’ll give it a whirl. Hopefully we bring something close.”

When asked about what it means to visit a new track for the first time, Sommers was eager for the challenge.

“Yeah, it means a lot, a lot of good cars,” Sommers exclaimed. “It just makes us better and better.”

The other driver to make his debut is three-time tour champion and recent Joe Shear Classic winner Casey Johnson.

“Never seen it,” Johnson said after his podium finish in the Salute the Troops 100 at Jefferson Speedway. “From what I heard, it’s a former horse track that they drive race cars at, so we’ll see how we do there.”

Johnson is currently tied for fourth on the all-time win list in the ASA Midwest Tour. He shares that spot with three-time Norway Speedway winner Nathan Haseleu and Travis Sauter. Sauter is now the crew chief for Sommers.

Both of these drivers hope to become the fourth driver to win at Norway Speedway. Jamie Iverson won the first four Tour events with Haseleu winning the next three events. Five-time ASAMT champion and current NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series champion won the last event at Norway back in 2015.

Expect a big field of touring and local stars and cars this Saturday night!
