ARCA Midwest Tour Heads Back to Wisconsin International Raceway This Saturday
by Series PR
August 6, 2014-The ARCA Midwest Tour presented by Scag Power Equipment returns to Wisconsin International Raceway (WIR) this Saturday, August 9th, for the Calypso Lemonade 100 presented by Scag Power Equipment. This will be the first time the series has raced at the venue since 2011.
Wisconsin International Raceway has been built on legendary names throughout the Midwest. One of those names is Sauter. Jim Sauter built a legacy at the track, a legacy that led to a family of competitors who have found the same type of success in the racing world. This Saturday the field will be comprised of three of those family members all hoping to carry on the legacy. Jim Sauter Jr., Travis Sauter, and NASCAR Camping World Truck driver, Johnny Sauter, who won the event in 2010, will all be representing the family name.
Johnny will be making the 1200 mile drive from Charlotte, NC to Kaukauna, WI this weekend and would like nothing more than to pick up another win at one of the tracks that tops his list. “It’s one of the tracks I have the fondest memories of,” says Johnny Sauter, “I went there a lot as a kid growing up and watched my dad race there a lot. It’s probably one of my favorite tracks so I put some added pressure on myself to win there. I think I’ve only raced there twice and we won last time so hopefully we can do it again.”
Known as one of the trickier tracks in the area, Wisconsin International Raceway provides a challenge for drivers, especially those who haven’t raced there in years. “You have the bump in turn one and then the dog leg on the frontstretch,” says Sauter, “It’s definitely one of the more unique tracks I’ve raced at. Travis (Sauter) tested there a few weeks ago so he called me with some updates, but I feel like we’ve been fast pretty much everywhere we go and typically if we are junk we are usually pretty good at getting the car a lot better during the day, so either way I think we should be fine and should have a decent set-up going in and then we’ll see.”
Sauter makes his return to super late model racing and the ARCA Midwest Tour after a disappointing 25th place finish at the Milwaukee Mile in June. Sauter was closing in on Erik Jones for the lead just before the halfway break when a mechanical failure ended his day early. After juggling a busy schedule and getting the car back together, he’s ready to get his super late model back on track.
“I’m getting used to disappointment,” says Sauter, “It always seems we have a wicked fast car everywhere we go and something breaks or we get dumped or something falls off. I take a lot of pride in the cars I’ve built, so I put pressure on myself and know if we can avoid some of the problems we’ve had we should be in good shape.”
Sauter currently sits second in NASCAR Camping World Truck Series points, just seven back from the leader. While it’s nice to take a “break” from point racing, Sauter says this weekend at WIR won’t be as relaxing as maybe it should be. “I have the same expectations every time I go. I’m disappointed if I’m not in the top three in qualifying and if I’m not the guy everyone’s chasing. The whole point of short track racing is to win. Why else would I go?” says Sauter, “It doesn’t matter what series you’re in. (Nathan) Haseleu, Travis, and (Ty) Majeski are going to be tough competition, no question. The only thing I can focus on is making my stuff fast and coming out on top.”
Along with the Sauters, the remainder of the field of drivers will also be looking to come out on top with a victory in the Calypso Lemonade 100 presented by Scag Power Equipment this Saturday night.
