The Wayne Carter Classic at Grundy County Speedway in Morris, Illinois is well known for its rich history and memorable moments. Another moment could be added this Saturday night when the annual running will focus on three-time ARCA Midwest Tour presented by SCAG Power Equipment Champion Ty Majeski.
One of three things could happen this Saturday night.
First, Majeski will win an unprecedented sixth straight ARCAMT win this season.
Second, one driver could outrun Majeski to the finish line. If they do, and Majeski is on the lead lap, they will collect a $1,000 bounty on Majeski to end his streak.
Third, Majeski could have a rare off night and not finish on the lead lap or the race and the ARCAMT will have its third different winner in 2017 joining Joe Shear Classic winner Andrew Morrissey and Majeski on that list. But, no bounty will be paid out.
Whoever wins this Saturday night will add their name to an elite list of winners in an event that started the famous ARTGO Challenge Series in 1975 when Tom Reffner won the event on September 7, 1975.
This year’s entry list will include a great mix of ARCAMT Touring Stars, Chicagoland top drivers and Grundy County Speedway regulars who will be deputized to hunt down and stop Ty Majeski’s streak and pick up that $1,000 reward.
The Wayne Carter Classic was a mainstay event in the ARTGO Challenge Series from 1975 to 1997 according to Stan Kalwasinski of ChicagolandAutoRacing.com. Names like Reffner, Dave Watson, Larry Phillips, Mike Miller, Mark Malcuit, Larry Schuler, Jim Sauter, Dick Trickle, Butch Miller, Joe Shear, Ted Musgrave, Kevin Cywinski, Steve Holzhausen and Dave Weltmeyer took the checkered flag and put themselves in a special place in short track history.
From 1998-99, the event ran as part of the NASCAR Elite Midwest Series with Eddie Hoffman and Steve Carlson taking the victories.
In 2011, the Midwest Tour brought the Wayne Carter Classic back after a long hiatus. Today’s stars like Ross Kenseth, Hoffman, Jonathan Eilen, Chris Weinkauf, and Majeski added their names to this special list.
This Saturday night, the drivers will be in the saloon sitting at the poker tables with their poker faces and will focus on when to go “all in” on Majeski to win the pot.
We could see an old-fashioned gun fight at the OK Corral this Saturday night.
Spectator gates will open at 3pm with qualifying at 5pm and racing will get underway at 7pm. The Mid-American Series and Illini Midgets will also be in action on Saturday night.
