ARCA Midwest Tour Heads to Wausau, WI on Saturday, May 17th
by Kari Shear-Carlson
May 9, 2014 – “Well, we’ve kind of had a rough start.” Rough start is an understatement for Chris Weinkauf, who has been unable to finish either of the first two ARCA Midwest Tour presented by Scag Power Equipment events, simply from being at the wrong place at the wrong time.
It isn’t for lack of speed that the Jay VanDerGeest Cattle, Professional Drywall, and Breber Music sponsored team has not yet crossed the finish line. In fact, last weekend at Madison International Speedway, Weinkauf was one of the fastest cars, topping the charts in practice both Saturday and Sunday.
While many teams would feel frustrated and a little defeated, the ARCA Midwest Touring Star and his entire team are actually excited…that’s right, excited. One of the reasons that the team is able to keep their heads up and look ahead is because of their car owner, Jay VanDerGeest.
“I think Jay is more excited than we are,” joked Weinkauf. “We ran decent at Toledo and were really good at MIS and he (Jay) is able to see the momentum in that and just wants us to go out there and build on it. So we are really looking forward to Wausau.”
Chris cannot say enough about the support Jay gives him and the entire operation. “He’s very generous, he does so much for us. He tries to do everything he can to help us get that win. We think we may have found something over the winter for these smaller tracks, so hopefully we can get it in the right place at the right time,” said Chris.
The Merrill, WI driver considers Wausau to be his home track. He has several track championships and would love to get an ARCA Midwest Tour win in front of his family and friends. “It’s been eluding me long enough,” laughed Chris.
When asked what the best part about winning would be, without hesitation, Chris said, “if I could applaud the fans after I win one of these races, that would mean more to me than anything.”
Make plans to be one of those fans next Saturday, May 17th, when the ARCA Midwest Tour heads to State Park Speedway in Wausau, WI. A complete schedule of the day’s events can be found at arcamidwesttour.com.
