July 6, 2012 – ASA Midwest Tour presented by SCAG Power Equipment and Lester Buildings Rookie of the Year point leader, Matt Tifft finished seventh in the famed World Crown 300 at Greshem Motorsports Park on Wednesday, July 4th.
The World Crown 300 is made up of three segments. Only those drivers on the lead lap and the first car a lap down continue on to each segment. Luck was on Tifft’s side as he received the lucky dog and stayed on the lead lap when he needed it most each time moving him on to segments two and three.
Tifft qualified tenth in his first ever trip to the track. With only 30 laps of practice experience, the biggest challenge for Tifft was getting the car set up for the long run. While running in fifth, Tifft and the team felt they had a decent car until it started to get really loose.
The heat and fairly new pavement made the track as slick as could be. That did not help Tifft’s situation. “We made huge adjustments but we just couldn’t shake the loose condition. But then ironically we came in to change four tires and could not get the left front to come off so we changed three and it solved all of our problems. It was just crazy,” laughed Tifft.
The key in the end was dodging wrecks and staying on the lead lap which is exactly what he did. “We were running with everyone in the end and honestly just being in the third segment was pretty cool,” said Tifft.
Matt Tifft is currently leading the ASA Midwest Tour Lane Automotive Rookie of the Year point standings. The next ASAMT event for Tifft is Friday, July 20th at Grundy County Speedway in Morris, IL. Follow asamidwesttour.com for event details.
